UK WASTE MANAGEMENT MARKET RESEARCH REPORT

After researching the UK waste management market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report:

MARKET REVIEW 2003-2007:

The total volume of waste arising in the UK is believed to have increased marginally during 2007, reaching an estimated 337 million tonnes. This follows modest increases in the previous four years. Since 2003, the total volume of waste arising has increased by an estimated 1%. Growth in waste arising is largely attributable to the building and demolition sector, along with moderate increases in domestic waste. The mining sector is believed to have remained the largest sector in terms of waste arisings, with a 28% share in 2007, despite a 2% decline in volume terms compared with 2003.

MARKET FORECAST 2008-2012:

Total waste arising in the UK is expected to remain relatively static throughout the forecast period at around 337 million tonnes. However a marginal decline to 336 million tonnes is projected in 2012. Mining is anticipated to continue to represent the sector with the largest waste arisings, although the volume of waste is expected to contract from 95 million tonnes in 2007 to 92 million tonnes in 2012, equivalent to an overall reduction of 3%. This decline reflects a reduction in mining activity in recent years that is projected to continue during the forecast period. Despite representing the largest waste arisings, much of the waste in the sector tends to be disposed of on-site rather than entering the waste disposal chain.
