After researching the UK stationery distribution market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report:

MARKET REVIEW 2003-2007:

The UK distributors’ market for stationery products, comprises of both the traditional retail market, the commercial sector and the SOHO sector. The value of the market is believed to have increased by 3% in 2007, taking sales to £2725.3 million. Prior to that sales fluctuated moderately, with the strongest increase of a nominal 4% recorded in 2005. Overall, the value of the distributors’ market for stationery products increased by an estimated 7% between 2003 and 2007. Demand has been driven by the development of the SOHO sector, and the trend towards premium products in the personal stationery market. However, a stronger value development is believed to have been restricted by intense price competition in the market. Furthermore, the increased use of the electronic mail, and the drive by companies to reduce paper volumes has also restricted a stronger market development.

MARKET FORECAST 2008-2012:

The UK market for stationery distribution is forecast to fluctuate moderately over the five year forecast period up to 2012. In 2008, the value of the market is forecast to decline by 1% in real terms to £2700.8 million, partly reflecting the economic slowdown during the year. However, some growth potential continues to exist in the market, and overall distributors’ sales are forecast to increase by a moderate 2% between 2007 and 2012. The market is expected to continue to be characterised by strong price competition, as a result of the changes in the distribution channels used, such as supermarkets diversifying in the stationery sector. Furthermore the increased use of e-commerce in the Stationery Distribution market is also expected to continue to exert a downward pressure on prices. Moreover, imports from low cost countries, in particular from China, are expected to continue to gain an increased share of the market. However, some sectors of the market also continue to be hit by rising raw material prices and manufacturing costs.
