UK ROAD HAULAGE MARKET RESEARCH REPORT

After researching the UK road haulage market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report:

MARKET REVIEW 2003-2007:

Overall between 2003 and 2007 the volume of goods lifted in Great Britain is believed to have increased by 13%, following year-on-year growth throughout the five year review period. In the latter year goods lifted are estimated to have reached 1852 million tonnes.

The volume of goods lifted largely reflects the economic performance, while the development of volume carried tends to be less than general economic growth due to the trend towards light weighting in many manufacturing sectors and the decline of heavier engineering industries in the UK. As such, the market is also influenced by changes in the structure of the UK economy and by trends in manufacturing design. This is reflected by the more moderate levels of growth for volume of goods moved compared with volume of goods lifted, during the five year review period. Goods moved are believed to have reached a five year peak of 157 billion tonne kilometres in 2007, representing cumulative growth of 3% since 2003.

MARKET FORECAST 2008-2012:

The UK road haulage market is anticipated to increase year-on-year between 2007 and 2012, although the rate of growth is expected to be more subdued in comparison with the review period. This can be partially attributed to increased government investment in rail freight and increased government regulation in the road haulage industry. The volume of goods lifted is anticipated to increase by 4% between 2007 and 2012, taking the freight lifted to 1927 million tonnes in the latter year. Goods moved are projected to reach a peak of 161.5 billion tonne kilometres by 2012, representing cumulative growth of 3% since 2007.
