UK RESTAURANTS MARKET RESEARCH REPORT

After researching the UK restaurants market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report:

MARKET REVIEW 2003-2007:

In 2007 the UK market for restaurants increased by 2% to reach a five year peak of £5526 million. Successive annual increases between 2003 and 2007 are believed to have culminated in overall growth of 11% during the review period. However, growth has been subdued somewhat by factors such as competition from public houses and fast food sectors. Furthermore the rising cost of food is believed to have impacted upon profit margins in the latest year. Nevertheless MBD believe increasing innovation and increased consumer spending during the review period has resulted in steady growth within the UK restaurants market.

MARKET FORECAST 2007-2011:

The UK market for restaurants is expected to increase during the majority of the five year forecast period, reaching a peak of £5567 million (at 2007 prices) in 2012. Modest declines during 2008 and 2009 are anticipated to be fully offset during subsequent years of the forecast period, with overall real term growth of 4% projected between 2007 and 2012. Stronger market development is expected to be hindered by uncertain economic conditions, rising inflation and the increased cost of borrowing on disposable incomes. Restaurants are also likely to face increased competition from pubs moving into the food sector. Nonetheless the restaurants market is expected to continue to benefit from social trends towards eating out as well as demographic trends towards an older population with higher disposable income.
