After researching the UK residential windows & doors market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report:

MARKET REVIEW 2003-2007:

The UK domestic market for doors, windows and conservatories reached an estimated £3940 million in 2007, equivalent to growth of 1% in the year and consolidating a 2% increase recorded in 2006. Market development has remained largely restricted during the five year review period, with declines of 1% and 2% recorded in 2004 and 2005 respectively. This is mainly due to a downturn in the direct sell sector, which has been affected by rising interest rates, resulting in consumers being more wary of borrowing and spending on home improvements and refurbishment activity. The sector has also been negatively affected by a slowdown in the housing market, and more uncertain economic condition, in particular towards the end of the review period. On the contrary, sales to the builders/contract sector continued to increase during recent years, reflecting buoyant new public and private house building activity.

MARKET FORECAST 2008-2012:

The forecast for the UK market for doors, door frames, windows, window frames and conservatories has been revised down compared with previous predictions, reflecting a slowdown in consumer spending and economic growth expected for 2008 as well as the increased cost of borrowing in the wake of the global credit crunch. Indeed, demand for doors, windows and conservatories is anticipated to decline by 2% in real terms in 2008. This is expected to be followed by moderate annual growth levels of between 1% and 3% in the subsequent four years of the forecast period. In 2012, the value of the market is forecast to reach £4210 million at 2007 prices, representing overall growth of 7% in real terms compared with 2007. Demand is expected to be driven by a positive development anticipated in new house building activity, although growth is expected to be more moderate than in recent years. In the short-term further demand is also expected to continue to be generated by the government’s Decent Homes programme, which will run until 2010.
