RELEASED: MARCH 2008 After researching the UK pastics market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report: MARKET REVIEW 2003-2007: The UK plastic products market is believed to have increased by 1% to £15.2 billion in 2007. This represents cumulative growth of 9% in comparison with 2003, following growth throughout the five year review period. Market growth partially reflects favourable conditions within the plastic packaging market, along with increased imports. However, growth is believed to have moderated during the review period, reflecting the high penetration of plastics, overcapacity and competitive pricing. Indeed, some businesses have been forced to relocate or source overseas. MARKET FORECAST 2008-2012: The value of the plastic products market is expected to increase throughout the forecast period, culminating in real term growth of 9% between 2007 and 2012. In the latter year demand is projected to increase by 2% in real terms to £16.7 billion (at 2007 prices). Growth in the market reflects continued growth in construction output, along with increasing substitution of traditional materials for plastic in the tubes and pipes sector. However, the market is expected to be restricted by intense price competition, increasing energy costs and scarcity of scrap due to demand from the Far East.
