After researching the UK pharmaceutical industry market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report:

Market Review 2001-2005

The UK market for pharmaceuticals increased year-on-year during the review period, culminating in an overall increase of 35% between 2001 and 2004 to a level of £12.7 billion during the latter year. In 2005 sales are expected to increase by a further 9% to a five year peak of £13.9 billion, continuing the strong growth recorded since 2001. The rate of market growth has oscillated around 10% throughout the review period, reflecting the relative stability of the market and also indicating that government initiatives to reduce costs have had little impact on the development of sales within the industry in value terms.

Market Forecast 2006-2010

UK demand for end use pharmaceutical products is expected to increase year-on-year during the five year forecast period, culminating in overall growth of 43% in real terms between 2005 and 2010. Particularly strong growth is forecast within the prescription only sector. During the forecast period MBD expect the relaxation of regulations within the pharmaceutical industry to fuel strong growth. The rate of market development is expected to decline as the forecast period progresses, partly as a reflection of an anticipated increase in the use of generic pharmaceutical products.
