RELEASED: OCTOBER 2007 After researching the UK occupational health market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report: MARKET REVIEW 2003-2007: The UK market for occupational health provision is projected to increase by 8% in nominal terms to £396 million in 2007, consolidating growth of 9% recorded in the previous year. There is a high degree of speculation regarding the value of the UK occupational health market, although MBD believe the market has increased in each year since 2003, with annual growth levels fluctuating between 6% and 9%. The public sector, which is less influenced by economic cycles, has been a major growth factor in the market. However, the reliance on corporate investment in the private sector does expose the market to a degree of economic influence. Indeed, growth is expected to be slightly more moderate in 2007 compared with the previous year, reflecting the projected slowdown in economic growth during the second half of the current year. MARKET FORECAST 2008-2012: MBD expect the UK market for occupation health provision to continue to demonstrate strong growth throughout the five year forecast period up to 2012. Annual growth rates are forecast to fluctuate between 5% and 7% in real terms, culminating in an overall increase of 34% in real terms between the current year and 2012. Although, there continues to be speculation about the pace of market growth in the occupational health sector, MBD believe that further growth is assured due to the increasing awareness of occupational health issues. Factors that may restrict a stronger market development include the lack of trained occupational health specialists and more uncertain economic conditions. Furthermore, pressure on corporate profitability also puts a strain on spending on non-core activities in the private sector. Nonetheless, MBD expect the trend towards outsourcing to continue over the next five years, as more organisations continue to out source non-core activities. Indeed, in 2012 outsourced occupational health services are forecast to account for 60% of the total occupational health market compared with 53% during the current year.
