After researching the UK nursery education market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report:

MARKET REVIEW 2003-2007:

In January 2007, 97% of the three and four year old population in England were benefiting from some early education at maintained schools or in the private, voluntary, or independent sector. During the year ending January 2007, 57% of all pupils aged under five attended a maintained nursery or primary school, including infant and reception classes. The number of pupils aged under five in maintained nurseries or primary schools increased from 312 500 in 2006 to 318 900 in 2007, representing a 2% increase during the year.

The total number of children aged three and four years old in early years education in the UK is believed to have been 1.2 million as of January 2007. The North West represents the region with the largest number of children in early years education, accounting for 14% and 12% of the total in England and the UK respectively.

MARKET FORECAST 2008-2012:

The continued support for the development of the day care industry from the government, combined with a more unified approach to the whole pre-school education system through the DfES, is anticipated to result in further growth in the market. However, the demographic trend towards a decline in the number of children aged under five is likely to restrict a stronger market development. In comparison, a number of recent government policies and programmes are likely to lead to an increase in the number of publicly funded nursery places, which is likely to exert a positive influence on the market. Overall, the number of full day care centre providers is anticipated to increase by a cumulative 13% between 2008 and 2012, reaching an estimated 16 400 providers in the latter year. The number of places per nursery is also anticipated to increase over the forecast period, albeit moderately, from 44.5 in 2008 to 49.3 in 2012.
