The UK medical equipment market is believed to have increased by a moderate 2% to £3348.9 million in 2007. This partially negated the 8% decline recorded during the previous year. The decline in 2006 coincided with reduced investment in R&D by healthcare companies in the UK. Nevertheless, overall demand for medical equipment increased by an estimated 12% between 2003 and the latest year. Market growth is partial reflection of increased Government spending on the NHS, continued demand for healthcare driven by the ageing population and adverse health trends such as increasing levels of obesity. Moreover technological advances and innovations have also provided growth opportunities within the market.

MARKET FORECAST 2008-2012:

The UK market for medical equipment is anticipated to increase during the majority of the forecast period, reflecting continued Government investment in healthcare, although a slowdown in funding is projected. Demand for healthcare will remain driven by the ageing population and growth in private sector healthcare. Moreover, adverse health trends including the increasing levels of obesity are expected to continue to boost the market. In 2012, the value of the medical equipment market (including supplies) is projected to increase by 2% to £3544.4 million (at 2007 prices), equivalent to overall real term growth of 6% compared with the latter year of the review period.
