UK MECHANCIAL & ELECTRICAL CONTRACTING MARKET RESEARCH REPORT

After researching the UK mechanical & electrical contracting market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report:

MARKET REVIEW 2003-2007:

In 2007, total mechanical & electrical contracting output increased by an estimated 5% to £25.65 billion. MBD has revised downwards its estimates for mechanical & electrical contracting output in Great Britain in 2007 due to a slowdown in construction output towards the end of the year. Indeed the development of the market is intrinsically linked to the construction industry. The strong market development during the first half of the review period was mainly a reflection of a very buoyant construction market during that period.

MARKET FORECAST 2007-2011:

Total mechanical & electrical contracting output is projected to increase in the five years to 2012 albeit at a more moderate rate than evident between 2003 and 2007. In 2008 only moderate real term growth of 1% is expected due to the slowdown in the wider economy. By 2012, total output is anticipated to reach £30.40 billion, representing a real term increase of 19% compared with 2007. The preparation for the 2012 Olympics will bring opportunities to the mechanical and electrical sector in the form of 9000 housing, sporting venues, road and rail infrastructure, all of which will have to be built and be ready prior to the Olympics. Growth is also anticipated to be driven by government building programmes such as the Building Schools for the Future initiative. Towards the end of the forecast period, construction of the Crossrail scheme will begin providing further opportunities for mechanical & electrical contractors.
