RELEASED: OCTOBER 2005 After researching the UK machine tools market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report: MARKET REVIEW 2001-2005: UK demand for machine tools is believed to contract during the majority of the five year period, with the exception of a moderate 2% increase in 2004. In the current year, a nominal 2% decline is anticipated to take sales to £625.9 million, equivalent to an overall reduction of 17% compared with 2001. The importance of the manufacturing sector to suppliers of machine tools in the UK tends to expose the market to significant economic fluctuations. The market largely reflects levels of expenditure in sectors such as aerospace, automotive and general engineering industries and this, in turn, is influenced by economic and political conditions. MARKET FORECAST 2006-2010: Demand for machine tools is strongly dictated by the end use sectors which are themselves strongly influenced by the development of the economy, both in the UK and internationally. Furthermore, there has been a growing trend in recent years of some of the end users, such as the automotive sector and, in part, the aerospace sector, to relocate or form alliances within mainland Europe in order to take advantage of the low interest rates within the EU in comparison with the UK. The UK’s indecision on its entry into the Eurozone has also been a factor in relocation decisions in recent years.
