UK LIGHT METAL PACKAGING MARKET RESEARCH REPORT

After researching the UK light metal packaging market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report:

MARKET REVIEW 2003-2007:

The UK market for light metal packaging is believed to have increased by a cumulative 2% between 2003 and 2007. Following three years of successive declines, demand for light metal packaging is estimated to have increased by 3% and 2% in 2006 and 2007 respectively, taking sales to £1380 million in the latter year. Opportunities for stronger growth within the market are believed to have been restricted as a result of substitution and rising costs within the sector. Furthermore, the increase in raw material prices has not assisted the competitive positioning of metal packaging in the market, particularly in volume terms. The recent increases in market value are believed to be a partial reflection of the efforts and success by light metal packaging companies to develop more innovative products.

MARKET FORECAST 2008-2012:

The UK market for light metal packaging is projected to decline throughout the five year forecast period, albeit at modest annual levels. In 2012, the value of the market is anticipated to contract by 1% to £1336.1 million (at 2007 prices), representing an overall decline of 3% in comparison with the latter year of the review period. Light metal packaging is projected to come under increasing pressure from material substitution, particularly from the plastic packaging industry. Furthermore the anticipated decline in demand also reflects the relatively high raw material prices, which are expected to remain a feature of the market over the next few years.
