UK GLASS PACKAGING MARKET RESEARCH REPORT

After researching the UK glass packaing market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report:

MARKET REVIEW 2003-2007:

MBD believe the UK market for glass packaging declined by 3% to £602 million in 2007, continuing the downward trend evident in recent years. Indeed, sales of glass packaging have been reduced during the majority of the review period, with the exception of a 6% increase in 2004. Overall, the value of the market is believed to have declined marginally between 2003 and 2007. Growth has been restricted during recent years due to the relative maturity of the market. Furthermore, glass has faced increased competition from other packaging materials, most notably plastic. Nonetheless, glass is expected to continue to remain the preferred packaging material in a number of sectors, as the material tends to be perceived as an environmentally friendly premium product.

MARKET FORECAST 2008-2012:

The UK market for glass packaging is anticipated to continue to fluctuate during the five year forecast period, albeit at moderate annual levels. In 2012, UK sales of glass packaging are projected to contract by a modest 1% to £605.6 million (at 2007 prices), although still equivalent to 1% real term increase compared with the latter year of the review period.
