RELEASED: JANUARY 2008 After researching the UK health & fitness clubs market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report: MARKET REVIEW 2003-2007: In 2007 the UK health and fitness market is believed to have reached £4486 million, representing an increase of 8% in the year and of 24% compared with 2003. Annual growth levels are believed o have fluctuated between 3% and 8%. MBD believe that the market returned to slightly stronger growth during the latter part of the review period as a result of the process of consolidation among the leading operators within the industry, which has relieved competition and price pressures during the latter two years of the review period. MARKET FORECAST 2008-2012: The UK market for health and fitness clubs is projected to increase year-on-year during the five year forecast period to reach a peak of £4946 million (at 2007 prices) in 2012, equivalent to overall cumulative growth of 10% compared with 2007. Annual levels of growth are expected to remain moderate at between 2% and 3%. Factors that have hindered stronger market development in recent years, such as increased competition, market saturation and declining membership fees, are likely to continue to impact the market over the next five years. However anticipated increases in obesity levels and projected growth in GP exercise referrals are likely to provide growth opportunities during the forecast period.
