RELEASED: JUNE 2005

After researching the UK fertilisers market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report:

MARKET REVIEW 2000-2004:

The UK fertiliser market declined by a moderate 1% to £980.2 million in 2004, although this follows strong growth of 19% in 2003. The decline in demand in 2004 may be attributable to the reduced incentive to purchase fertiliser as a result of the warm weather providing favourable farming conditions. Demand for fertiliser has been increased during the majority of the review period, with the exception of a notable 16% decline in 2001, partially reflecting the impact of the Foot and Mouth epidemic and the effects of the wettest autumn for 230 years.

MARKET FORECAST 2005-2009:

Further rationalisation of the fertiliser industry is expected, as well as an increase in new global players and as such MBD anticipate demand to moderately decline during much of the forecast period. However annual levels of decline are not expected to exceed 1% in real terms. Between 2004 and 2009, MBD expect sales to decline by 3% in real terms, taking the value to £949.3 million at 2004 prices in the latter year.
