RELEASED: JULY 2005 After researching the european construction market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report: MARKET REVIEW 2000-2004: The decline in the EU construction market in 2002 and stagnant conditions in 2003 is believed to have been halted in 2004, when the value of the market advanced by a nominal 2%, taking output to £653 billion. The slow market during the previous two years, in particular, is believed to have reflected the continued appreciation of the euro, coupled with significant reductions in private investment during 2002 and 2003. Furthermore, the decline was exacerbated by cuts in public expenditure since the beginning of the new Millennium, after the inflated spending in the approach to it. GDP growth across much of Europe was increased during 2004, after experiencing reductions during most of the review period and this had a positive impact in the construction industry, culminating in a 2% nominal rise in 2004 to an estimated market value of £653.35 billion. MARKET FORECAST 2005-2009: Year on year growth in the European construction market is anticipated to be marginal in real terms during the forecast period. The market is expected to remain relatively broadly static throughout the forecast period, with year-on-year increases of only 1%-1.5%. This excludes the impact of the oncoming 2012 Olympics, which will inevitably increase overall output somewhat in the UK.
