RELEASED: MARCH 2007 After researching the UK domiciliary care market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report: The UK domiciliary care market is believed to have been increased during each year under review, although annual rates of growth are estimated to have slowed over the five-year period. In 2006, demand for domiciliary care services increased by an estimated 3% to £49.8 billion, consolidating the 4% growth recorded in the previous year. Overall, the value of the market is believed to have increased by 19% between 2002 and 2006. Increased demand for domiciliary care services is largely a reflection of government initiatives to promote independent living, in line with continued emphasis of reducing demand for residential care through the provision of improved domiciliary services. Moreover, the continued increase in the number of people aged 65 and over, along with recent declines in the number of residential care homes and places is believed to have facilitated growth. MARKET FORECAST 2007-2011: The UK market for domiciliary care is projected to demonstrate continued growth during the forecast period, albeit at moderate annual real term levels. The value of domiciliary care provision is anticipated to reach £56.7 billion (at 2006 prices) in 2011, representing an overall 14% real term increase compared with the latter year of the review period. Anticipated growth is a partial reflection of government initiatives to promote independent living and a desire amongst the elderly to remain in their own homes. Further market growth is expected to be facilitated by the continued aging of the population, in particular the increasing population of over 85 year olds. Indeed, the number of people aged 85 and over increased by a modest 1% and stronger 6% in 2004 and 2005 respectively, reversing the downward trend evident between 2001 and 2003, largely due to the reduced birth rate during the First World War. This growth is believed to have been consolidated by a further 5% increase, taking the over 85 population to 1.1 million in 2006. Although moderate real term growth is projected in the number of residential care homes and places during the forecast period, MBD believe this is unlikely to have a negative effect on the domiciliary care market, as whilst the social stigma of placing elderly relatives in care homes may have diminished, it nevertheless remains a feature of the market. Furthermore, MBD expect the informal market to be boosted by proposed Bills in the Queens speech along with the governments ‘New Deal for Carers’ support package.
