UK DENTISTRY MARKET RESEARCH REPORT

After researching the UK dentistry market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report:

MARKET REVIEW 2003-2007:

Total expenditure on NHS and private dental care is believed to have increased throughout the review period. In 2007, total spending increased by 11% to an estimated £6922 million, consolidating the 15% growth recorded in the previous year. Stronger growth during 2006 is a partial reflection of increased gross expenditure on GDS in the year. Overall, total spending on UK dentistry has been increased by an estimated 51% between 2003 and 2007, partly attributable to increased Government funding along with increased demand for private dentistry largely as a result of the NHS dental reforms. Indeed, the importance of private expenditure to total spending on dentistry has been increased from 54% in 2003 to an estimated 59% in the latest year.

MARKET FORECAST 2007-2011:

Between 2007 and 2012, spending on NHS dentistry is expected to increase by 18% to £3363 million (at 2007 prices) in the latter year. Annual rates of growth are expected to be stronger during the first half of the forecast period largely due to increased NHS funding announced for 2008/2009, reflecting the Government’s commitment to improve access to NHS dental services.

The development of the private sector is expected to continue to be stronger than that of the NHS sector during the forecast period, partly due to increased cosmetic consciousness along with the negative impact of the dentistry reforms which, in turn, resulted in the declining availability of NHS dentists. Expenditure on private dentistry is projected to increase by 3% to £5326 million (at 2007 prices) in 2012. Moreover, the importance of the sector to total dental care expenditure is anticipated to increase moderately from 60% in 2008 to 61% in the latter year of the forecast period.
