UK CIVIL ENGINEERING MARKET RESEARCH REPORT

After researching the UK civil engineering market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report:

MARKET REVIEW 2003-2007:

In 2007, civil engineering construction output in Great Britain increased by an estimated 4% to £7650 million, consolidating the trend for increase evident in both 2005 and 2006. Prior to that, output declined by 8% and 11% in 2003 and 2004 respectively to a period low of £7287 million. Overall, output is believed to have declined by 6% between 2003 and 2007. Much of the development in recent years is due to increased activity in the utilities sector which has been brought on by key investment programmes for each industry. In 2007, significant growth was evident in the sewerage, electricity, railways and harbours sector. The communications, gas & air transport sectors are the only ones believed to have declined in 2007.

MARKET FORECAST 2008-2012:

Total civil engineering output is anticipated to demonstrate year on year growth of 3% in real terms to £8856 million in 2012 (at 2007 prices). Growth in the short term is expected to reflect anticipated work in many of the sectors including the utilities, railways, harbours and road sector. Work carried out in the utilities sector will reflect the impact of recent periodic reviews and increased level of investment.
