UK BOOK PUBLISHING MARKET RESEARCH REPORT

After researching the UK book publishing market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report:

MARKET REVIEW 2003-2007:

The UK market for books is believed to have increased by 3% to £3414 million in 2007. This consolidates annual growth of between 3% and 4% recorded during each previous year of the review period. Overall growth of an estimated 14% was recorded compared with 2003. According to the Publishers Association, UK publishers sold an estimated 787 million books in 2006, with an invoiced value of £2814 million, which represented a marginal decline in volume terms and a 2% increase in value terms compared with 2005. Of the total, £1814 million were UK sales and the remaining £999 million were exports. In volume terms 472 million were UK sales and the remaining 314 million were exports.

MARKET FORECAST 2008-2012:

The UK market for books is expected to demonstrate real term growth throughout the forecast period of between 1% and 2%. This moderate growth reflects the relative maturity of the book market. Overall demand is anticipated to increase by 9% in real terms to £3712 million by 2012 (at 2007 prices) compared with 2007.
